Nvidia Unleashes New 800M-Series Laptop Video Cards

New video cards from Nvidia push the boundaries of gaming laptops

Today, Nvidia announced its 2014 line-up of laptop video cards: the 800M series.

Leading the pack is the GeForce GTX 880M, the successor to last year's GTX 780M. In addition to performance increases across the board, the 800M series offers several attractive new features: Battery Boost locks into a chosen frame rate to lower the power draw of the video card, extending battery life; ShadowPlay mode lets players record or broadcast gameplay; and GameStream Technology, which allows gamers to stream PC games to an Nvidia Shield handheld device. This last feature was previously only available on Nvidia's desktop graphics cards.

Other cards in the 800M series include the GeForce GTX 870M, GTX 860M, and GTX 850M. Nvidia will also release three lower-end cards: the GeForce 840M, 830M, and 820M. Multi-card configurations (SLI) will be supported on the GTX 880M, GTX 870M, and GTX 860M models.

Manufacturers who have confirmed use of Nvidia's 800M series include Alienware, Asus, Gigabyte, Lenovo, MSI, and Razer.
