overpriced, but a "sure thing" in the dongle department
Does what it advertises. Not as full featured as i would hope, the inclusion of a micro USB slot for expanded storage options and cameras would have been a nice thought. overpriced, but at least it won't fry your computer like other USB C dongles have been said to do, and it it does, Apple won't have any excuse not to warranty your product. I've lost quite a bit of faith in Apple's willingness to acknowledge errors in their products, ranging from batteries to the structural integrity of their products, so that's some piece of mind right there
This is a great product because it does what it's supposed to do. In my case, I had a late 2016 MacBook pro 15". That means I gave up all of my accessories connecting directly and now need adapters to go to Thunderbolt 3, aka USB-C. While the machine has the internals to drive two monitors, Apple and the manufacturers want you to buy new, very expensive, Thunderbolt monitors and frankly, I don't want to buy new monitors to meet Apple's version of an ideal setup. Instead, I have two Dell UltraSharp U2717D which do not support thunderbolt but are absolutely fantastic monitors. They want a HDMI or DP signal and don't seem to work properly with any of the docks available on the market. I tried everything and here's what I found (to save you a LOT of time and frustration): 1) The MBPro CAN drive two monitors from a single TB3 port, but you need a dock that has a TB3 pass-thru AND a HDMI port. You connect this device to the TB3 pass-thru, connect one monitor to this device's HDMI and one to the dock's HDMI. In this configuration, it works flawlessly - one single cord and two monitors plus peripherals. DP doesn't work - only HDMI. 2) If you don't want/have a dock, just score TWO of these units and two HDMI cables and you're all set - cheapie dual monitor setup.
The MBPro is a great machine with major flaws. If you're not trying to drop $8k on your kit, this little device with a dock or two of this device will allow the desktop space you need for much less than any other alternative.
NOTE: I use the Lenovo dock meant for the Yoga with USB-C. It is, in my experience, the best available. No matter what they promise, no Apple supplier's dock will do what you need if you have non-Thunderbolt monitors - NONE. The Lenovo dock plus this adapter is flawless.
I originally tried to use this adapter for my Dell U3415W 34" ultra-wide monitor connecting with AmazonBasics "4K-compatible" cable (see my original review). I got static noise and constant disconnects on my monitor. It was not usable and this was frustrating because my Windows PC had no problem with the monitor using Dell-supplied DisplayPort cable.
I always thought that a "premium" digital cables are total BS and.... well, I was proven 100% wrong.
I was desperate to get my monitor working, so I looked into 4K HDMI cable. Aopparently, there are HDMI-certified cables that is tested by HDMI center to guarantee that each cable works at full HDMI 2.0 spec (18Gbps and UHD resolution). I checked on Amazon and Monoprice has Monoprice Certified Premium High Speed HDMI Cable, 6ft for very affordable price (~$6 for 6ft), and in fact its about the same price as AmazonBasics cable. This cable is no BS cable with manufacturer saying its "4K-ready" and what not. It has actually been tested by HDMI to work at current HDMI spec.
Note that Apple says the adapter can only handle 4K @ 30 Hz and this is the limitation of the adapter. However, I can run my U3415W at 60 Hz without any problem using this cable.
If you tried to use similar ultra-wide or 4K display with the adapter and had problems, try the HDMI-certified cable from Monoprice.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ORIGINAL REVIEW:
In case Apple fixes this, the review is based on 2016 13" Macbook Pro (no Touchbar) running OS X Sierra 10.12.1 and USB adapter driver version 2.33.
Simply put, this Does not work on 2016 Macbook Pro and Dell ultra-wide U3415W monitor at 3440 x 1440. Apple claims support up to 3840 x 2160 (4K UHD @ 30 Hz).
Monitor is recognized by the Macbook Pro, but nothing shows at 60 Hz or 50 Hz. Lowering the refresh rate to 30 Hz gives noisy picture with static noise coming from the Dell monitor. Also, the monitor keeps connecting and disconnecting when its at 30 Hz.
So if you are looking to get Dell U3415W to work for 2016 Macbook Pro, it does not work unless Apple updates the driver in the future to fix the issue.
Considering this is at a specially low price temporarily its a no brainer. Using this with a macbook pro 2016 13" non touch bar. It charges through the USB PD pass through at 55W and everything works fine. I'm able to power a usb hub with a wireless mouse, keyboard, and a 2TB western digital usb 3.0 drive just fine all through this port.
At this price which is only maybe $10-15 more than some of the 3rd party ones its worth the peace of mind of actually having one that works all the time and charges at 55W (a lot of the other ones either dont charge or only really charge the macbook 12 or chromebooks etc)
Very fine product. No problems at all. Does exactly what I expect it to do. However, because it’s an Apple product - it’s definitely expensive compared to other products that perform similar functions. Undoubtedly, it is highly reliable. So much so that to me, the reliability of the product justifies the price increase. My opinion is based on how much I value reliability.
It works as it should. Use it to connect HDMI display. The only problem with it is the price. Apple products are highway robbery when you consider you have to pay so much for something. I tried to buy a 3rd party HDMI adapter but it didn't work. Ended up needing the Apple brand. Bad enough we have to buy so many dongles with the new Macbook pro. They shouldn't charge so much for them.
Badass. It's exactly what you're looking for. I'm sure you're like me when you received your awesome new MacBook Pro with ports that confuse even the techs at Apple. You wonder, OK, on the Air I gave up a CDROM, I can live with that.. a few USB ports....I can make do... Then.. WTF!!! Where are all the ports! What am I supposed to do??? How can I connect stuff?!?!?! Well, if you think about it, everything is in the cloud. As much as I tried to fight the idea of losing what I didn't really need, I ended up buying this adapter. The PRIMARY reason, which I am sure will be yours, is for the HDMI port. I wanted to hook up my monitor.. Works as described no issues at all whatsoever. I travel with this bad boy everywhere I go...
Muy practico con la calidad de apple. lo guardo en mi maleta de viaje para cualquier cosa. en el caso de que tenga que proyectar algo y no se puede conectar sin cables
